TIME Magazine’s Top 100 Novels

by Rob Friesel

TIME Magazine lists their top 100 novels of all time. Well, top 100 English-language novels of all time. From 1923 to the present.

I’m pleased to report that several of my all-time favorites made the list. What surprised me were the authors that made duplicates to the list. For example, Saul Bellow’s The Adventures of Augie March and Herzog both made the list while Vonnegut only made it on for Slaughterhouse-Five (shocking because if anything it should have been Breakfast of Champions!)

Aside from Breakfast of Champions though, no glaring omissions come to mind. Some Camus and Kafka dangled momentarily in my peripheral vision but then I remembered that whole “English-language” caveat to their list. On second thought, Grendel – – how could they have excluded this seminal work?

As with any list of this nature, there’s bound to be some disagreement, I’m sure. (E.g., I think Beloved is Toni Morrison’s most overrated novel…) But overall, not bad. I just can’t believe I haven’t gotten to all these yet…
