stop remixing and make something new
¶ by not non-fictionThe rhetoric about the legitimacy of “remixing as art” aside, we really do need to take a moment and admit that re-packaging something creatively (while fun and exciting and creative in its own right) is not adding something to the aesthetic and cultural discourse in the same way that creating something totally new is. And don’t give me that post-modern horse-shit about how it’s all been done before and everything “new” is influenced by everything that came before it; that’s just a tired old excuse you use when someone (legitimately or not) calls your work derivative, mediocre, or uncreative.
Suck it up and try again.
The invention of something truly original in its own right, executed masterfully, is very rare because it is unimaginably hard work.
