Best Photos of 2005?

by Rob Friesel

Via Smart Mobs:

Time Magazine have chosen Adam Stacey’s cameraphone picture as one of the Best Photos of the Year 2005 – of his experience on the london underground during the attack in London on the 7th of July 2005.

I really must admit, I still get these intense shivers when I see the photo of the guy holding his shirt up to cover his face like a mask. (See the iconic image here, in it’s original-ish context…) For me it’s this weird convergence point – – the image itself feels like it shouldn’t be real, can’t be real – – it’s a freeze frame from a video game cut scene. But it’s not. And those people are suffering and frightened and in so much peril. Which makes it recurse into the this is out of some video game… or movie train of thought even more. PoMo theory crap aside, for whatever reason this just hits me in a way that none of Time‘s other nominations can…
