Homebrew #27: Cupid & Psyche

by Rob Friesel

Inspired by Tazo’s Passion herbal tea, this brew was intended as an early Xmas present to my wife, 1 who had expressed a fondness for it, 2 and was looking for something special to drink over the holiday break. Thus was born the formulation for Cupid & Psyche:

  1. Regular readers will recall I did this for her two years ago, as well.[]
  2. A fondness for the tea, not the beer, which hadn’t been brewed yet.[]

Homebrew #26: Sirius Moonlight

by Rob Friesel

With my fermentation chamber proven out, it was time to try my hand at brewing with a lager strain. Granted, looking over my Untappd data, I tend to prefer ales — but I’ve been known to enjoy a Vienna from time to time. And since this is homebrewing and we can do whatever we want… why not throw in a little rye? Or a lot? A Vienna mit Roggen, to coin an auf Deutsch phrase. And so, I present Sirius Moonlight: 1

  1. About that name… My family has been really… “forgiving” — even Stockholm syndrome-esque supportive of — my brewing hobby. And while my wife remains interested only in the consumption side, my kids have gotten interested in (and engaged in) the production side. My boys (appear to) love learning about the science behind it all, and what kind of thought process goes into deciding on styles and ingredients etc. And they keep suggesting different styles (as they flip through my books) and/or ingredients to try and/or (in this case) names to fasten onto a particular beer. And it was with this beer that my youngest asked if we could name this beer after David Bowie. “Sure,” I told him; “did you have a specific reference in mind?” He told me “Let’s Dance” — and while I didn’t personally grasp onto that, we did agree on borrowing the line about “Serious Moonlight”. My older boy (Harry Potter fan that he is) and my wife suggested making the slight play on words. And that stuck.[]

Even fewer search terms than last month; perhaps it’s time to retire this feature? Or start doing it quarterly? I’m hesitant to deep six the blog all together. I guess I’ve just lost my sparkle.

“Search Term Haiku” is a series wherein I examine this site’s log files and construct one or more haiku poems from search terms and phrases that led visitors to the site. Where possible, I attempt to keep the search phrases intact. However, as these are haiku poems, I do need to follow the rules.

Almost too few search terms in last month’s Analytics to construct a haiku at all — so that’s a bummer. And I might be kind of cheating with “family” (i.e., fam-lee vs. fam-eh-lee) but… meh.

Homebrew #24: Honestatis (Mk. IV)

by Rob Friesel

I was coming up on the second anniversary of my first homebrew; my twenty-fourth overall, and my twenty-first as Tilde Gravitywerks. I got the idea that since it was a red ale that started it all, and since I’ve been working on a red ale as my signature beer, that such a beer was what I should brew to commemorate the milestone. Thus, the fourth version of Honestatis:

Vicious H-Bomb: a second place winner!

by Rob Friesel

When I brewed Vicious H-Bomb, it was just to satisfy two things:

  1. H.’s lament that he should have a beer named after him; and
  2. My desire to experiment with some Belgian yeast.

In other words, I never intended to enter it into competition but… when the Fair rolled around and I heard there was a homebrew competition in it, I just couldn’t resist.

And I’m glad I didn’t.
