I wrote tonight for the first time in what was probably about a month. It wasn’t a lot. But it was good. Some revisions and new material. Again, not a lot. But good. I felt guilty and I felt tired. By the end of writing I wanted to cry. That was a drag. Writing feels good. Anyone whose known me longer than 10 seconds knows that I want to do it full-time some day. So that’s where the guilt came from. Tired came from the fact that I don’t do it full-time yet. (Anyone who works full-time knows what I’m talking about.) So I’ll settle for the 2-ish hours of writing that I did fit in.
That said, it’s also been tough to keep track of the dreams recently. I know that my brain has been busy making them but upon waking they instantly evaporate into thinly applied films at the corners of my eye. There was a recent one where I’d been cast as a Japanese voice actress pursued by locusts unfolding into mecha and another where I was a small time thug affiliated with a gangster played by the elusive Vincent Gallo. And then last night’s (about writing, no less) whese my 9th grade U.S. history teacher had some thoughtful words for me on the subject. But all of this on waking loses its cadence.
Time to take some deep breaths.

As a vampire family, it’s hard to keep everyone in line. I’ve managed somehow to temporarily emerge during the daylight and hold a barbeque. My wife and her son are not vampires but they’re necessary to keep up the front and live in this neighborhood. Not sure how much longer we’ll be able to keep this up though, I think as the guests start to leave. She has been an asset in helping my stay inconspicuous for so long. Her proclivities as sexually active as they are, the house has always been full of men that make easy targets for feeding. Her son has been a benefit as well, helping me to control her as well as adding to the whole charade; no one suspects that we’re anything but a normal family. And as the last couple guests linger though, I wonder what I’ll do next. The boy is getting older and people are going to start thinking soon that it’s weird when he talks about his mommy and daddy being vampires. (Even if only the latter is true.) As we clean up, I wonder how I’ll approach the problem because I’ll need to do something about this sooner rather than later.
Via Gizmodo via Boing Boing: Akihabra News article “2nd hand electronics sales will soon be illegal in Japan”:
So from April 1st 2006, ALL electronic products sold in Japan before 2001 will be prohibited from the 2nd hand market!
Instantly brings to mind Gibson’s line from Neuromancer re: “…in Japan, cash had been illegal for a decade…” (or something along those lines).Gives me teh creeps…
Recently picked up a copy of Midwest Product’s album “Specifics” and have been enjoying it pretty thoroughly. Probably would have never picked up on it had I not seen it mentioned in Urb like 3 years ago. But for whatever reason it stuck out in my mind (maybe it’s the “???” name or the “that’s gotta be a Buick station wagon” lineart on the cover) and I finally brought myself to drop the scratch on it. Glad I did.
It’s in the warbly analog-synth-with-live-instruments vein and has a distinctly American electronica feel to it that has always seemed to hit close to home with me. Think: Crystal Method if they were a clumsy Bob Dylan? No that’s not it… How about “Big In Japan does instrumental covers of Junior Boys”…? Or Metro Area remixes Autechre? That’s a bit more like it. There’s some nice stuff going on in these tunes - - interesting counter-points and contrasts (re: aggressive percussion over and/or under softer, at times totally chilled out melodies). Anyway: recommended.

If you [tag]work[/tag] (and who doesn’t?), you’re probably forced to attend [tag]meetings[/tag]. And if you’re like me, your skin crawls at the very idea of having more than three people in a room at the same time. Thus do I suggest this [tag]43 Folders[/tag] article: 9 tips for running more productive meetings - - you’ll thank me. Or rather, you’ll thank [tag]Merlin[/tag].

Wow!
In my perfect world, ALL retail would be like this.
I can see the newspaper articles now…
In a stunning act of generosity, Objectivists worldwide donate over 40,000 copies of Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead to the New Orleans public library system.

28 Days Later. About as expected zombie-ish flick with a twist. Decent premise and a whole lot of suspense (though a bit over the top at times). Take that animal rights activists.
Hidalgo. Better than expected but still glad I didn’t catch it in the theater. Half-blood late-19th century cowboy tears ass across the Arabian desert on his half-blood horse. If it were a beverage it’d been served with a dash of surprise and a twist of irony.
White Oleander. Post-feminist “Cinderella” gone horribly wrong. Nevertheless, if you can make it through the second act, it’s worth seeing it through to the end. Moral: there’s no such thing as redemption.
